Boy, 12, suffers severe burns after entering power substation in Penang

A boy of 12 years old was severely burned by an electric shock when he went to get a ball from a power substation in Penang yesterday, 16 November.

The boy, Mohd Dawisy Zarif Mohd Khairi, was playing football with his friends at a housing area in Bayan Lepas when the incident happened around 4.40pm, FMT reported.

He entered the substation, which belongs to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), to retrieve a ball that had gone inside.

He was found by some people who moved him to a safe place and called for help.

The fire and rescue department arrived at the scene at 4.55pm after receiving a distress call.

"The child had burns almost all over his body after he entered the substation," fire and rescue operations officer Hirman Mat Rodzi said, according to Buletin TV3.

"He was given first aid treatment and then taken to Penang Hospital in an ambulance."

A team of 10 firefighters checked the substation to make sure it was safe and then handed it over to TNB staff for further action, FMT said.

TNB said in a statement last night that it is investigating the cause of the incident.
