Murder Charges for Four Teens in Brutal Beating of Rancho High Student

Four teenagers arrested in the fatal beating of a 17-year-old Rancho High School student appeared in court again on Tuesday and were formally charged with second-degree murder.

The suspects are Gianni Robinson, 17, Damien Hernandez, 17, Treavion Randolph, 16, and Dontral Beaver, 16. They are being tried as adults and are being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center. They are set to appear in court again on Dec. 7 for a preliminary hearing.

The victim, Jonathan Lewis Jr., was attacked by a group of at least eight teenagers on Nov. 1 near the intersection of North Eastern Avenue and East Washington Avenue, about a mile away from the school. The assault was captured on a video that a top police official called "very void of humanity."

According to the arrest report, the video showed Lewis being punched, kicked, and stomped on by multiple assailants while he was lying on the ground. He was also hit with a metal pipe and a brick. He suffered multiple skull fractures, brain bleeding, and a broken jaw. He was taken to University Medical Center, where he died on Nov. 3.

The motive for the attack is still unclear, but the report stated that some of the suspects told police that they had an ongoing feud with Lewis over a girl. Some of the suspects also admitted to being members or associates of a local gang.

The police identified the suspects through the video, witness statements, and social media posts. Four other juveniles, ranging in age from 13 to 15, have also been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the case. Because they are under the age of 16, they will need to go through a certification hearing in Family Court for a judge to determine if they will be tried as adults.

The death of Lewis, who was a junior at Rancho High School, has shocked and saddened the school community. A vigil was held for him on Nov. 4, where his family and friends remembered him as a kind, funny, and talented young man who loved music and sports. His father, Jonathan Lewis Sr., said he hoped that justice would be served for his son.

"I just want them to pay for what they did," he said. "They took my son away from me. He had a bright future ahead of him. He didn't deserve this."

Conclusion:

The tragic death of Jonathan Lewis Jr. has sparked outrage and grief among his family, friends, and schoolmates. He was a victim of a senseless and violent attack by a group of teenagers who are now facing murder charges as adults. The police are still investigating the motive and the extent of the involvement of each suspect. The case has also raised questions about the prevalence of gang activity and youth violence in the area. The community hopes that this case will serve as a wake-up call and a deterrent for future crimes.
