Sheynnis Palacios, a 23-year-old communications graduate and television host from Diriamba, Nicaragua, was crowned Miss Universe 2023 on November 18, 2023, at the Gimnasio Nacional in San Salvador, El Salvador. She became the first Nicaraguan to win the prestigious title and the first to win one of the Big Four international beauty pageants. She also became the second woman from Central America to be crowned Miss Universe after Justine Pasek of Panama in 2002. However, Palacios is the first Central American to win the title of Miss Universe outright, as Pasek was originally the first runner-up and inherited the title after the original titleholder was dethroned.

Palacios competed against 84 other beauties from around the world in the 72nd edition of the Miss Universe pageant, which marked the debut of Pakistan and the returns of 10 countries including Denmark, Egypt, Guyana, Hungary, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Mongolia, Norway, and Zimbabwe. For the first time in its history, both the Netherlands and Portugal were represented by transgender women following Spain's Angela Ponce who participated in 2018.

The top 5 finalists were: Brazil, France, Nicaragua, Philippines, and South Africa. They faced the final question round, where they had to answer a question from one of the judges. The questions were:

Palacios answered her question in Spanish, which was translated into English by Bolivar. She said: "I think that beauty pageants are not only about beauty, but also about intelligence, culture, and values. They are platforms that allow us to raise our voice and make a positive impact in our society. They empower women by giving them opportunities to grow, learn, and achieve their dreams. They also inspire other women to follow their example and be agents of change in the world."

The final results were announced by Harvey, who joked about his infamous mistake in 2015 when he announced the wrong winner. He said: "I have done this a few times, so let me just read it carefully."
