In one of the worst road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir, at least 38 people were killed and 17 others injured when a bus carrying passengers from Kishtwar to Jammu skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge near Assar in Doda district on Friday morning. The bus was reportedly overloaded and had around 55 passengers on board.

The accident occurred around 8:30 am at Trungal Assar, about 35 km from Doda town, when the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a sharp curve. The bus rolled down about 300 feet and landed on a rocky patch near a stream. The impact of the crash was so severe that the bus was completely mangled and many passengers were trapped inside.

The locals and the police rushed to the spot and launched a massive rescue operation with the help of the army and the paramilitary forces. The injured were shifted to the nearby hospitals and some of them were airlifted to Jammu for specialized treatment. The rescue operation was hampered by the difficult terrain and the inclement weather.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed deep sorrow and anguish over the loss of lives in the accident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the injured. He also directed the administration to provide the best possible medical care to the injured and all possible assistance to the bereaved families.

Sinha spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and apprised them of the situation. He also thanked them for their prompt response and support. Modi and Shah expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

The LG also visited the accident site and the hospital where the injured were admitted and assured them of all possible help from the government. He also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the cause of the accident and asked the authorities to take strict action against those responsible for the negligence and violation of the norms.

The LG said that the government will take all necessary steps to prevent such accidents in the future and ensure the safety of the passengers. He said that the government will install crash barriers, CCTV cameras, speed radars and other safety measures on the accident-prone roads in the hilly areas. He also appealed to the people to follow the traffic rules and avoid overloading and rash driving.
